How to make a basketball hoop for your room

If you love the game and can’t get enough of it, what better way to enjoy it than in the comfort of your bedroom? There are a few ways you can go about making a basketball hoop for a room.

Depending on the available space, the resources you have, and the placement, you might choose alternate approaches to designing a hoop for your room. These are some of the simple ways you can make a hoop and rim for your room, and enjoy your favorite game at any time.

Simple DIY :

You can make your own hoop and rim with a few supplies. For your rim, you can take an old milk cartoon, an old bike-tire, or other round object you have lying around the house or garage. Once you’ve found your rim, cut out the bottom, remove sharp edges, and sand it down to ensure it is safe to put up in a room.

The next thing you need is a place to hang the rim. The back of your door, the side of a desk, or any other flat surface you can find, with sufficient clearance room for you to shoot, will suffice. These surfaces are ideal for your backboard, and are of course going to provide the stability your rim needs.

Make sure you give yourself enough clearance room when hanging the rim; 6-10 feet above and below should be sufficient, depending on the size of your room.

To hang the rim to your backboard (flat surface), simply use an electric drill. Make small holes on the back of the bike tire and affix it to the wall.

If you are using an old milk cartoon, you simply have to screw the cartoon directly into the wall you’ve chosen for your backboard.

You are likely going to have to use an electric drill or power tools, in order to affix the rim onto the backboard surface. But, this is a simple DIY task you can use, if you have a larger room and want to place a basketball hoop in it.

Purchase mini-hoop rim set :

In many instances, you aren’t going to have old tires or round items large enough to provide the rim for your basketball hoop in the bedroom. If this is the case, you can buy a mini-hoop at a local sporting goods store.

Using this hoop, you simply choose a flat surface/wall to act as your backboard, and you stick the hoop onto that surface.

In some cases, you are going to have to use nails and screws in order to affix the hoop onto the wall. In some cases, you can use a double-sided tape for smaller rims. If this is a child’s room, this might be a good alternative.

There is not messy work to clean up, nothing dangerous, and it is quick and easy for you to put together, and place in a corner of their room for play.

Household items:

A third approach you might want to take is finding old household items you no longer use. For example, for your ball, you can use old socks or t-shirts you’ve torn, and bound them tightly to create a ball. Simply place aluminum foil or something sturdy in the middle, in order to maintain the round-structure for your ball.

For the rim, take an old garbage can and cut out the bottom. You can also use old laundry baskets or items that you can simply cut the bottom from it, in order for the ball to fall through when you shoot it. Now, for the backboard.

A simple option is to use a large cardboard box and cut out a rectangular base to affix to the wall. Alternatively, you can always use the wall and use chalk to dry the lines on the backboard in the room.

With these lighter items, double-sided tape will typically work well to keep them secure in place. You can alternatively use a nail and hammer or electric drill to affix the baskets onto the wall.

Regardless of the items you have lying around the home, more often than not you have some which are round, and others which are rectangular, these are a few simple ideas you can find in any household, when it comes to designing your own hoop and rim set using household items.

Conclusion:

When it comes to setting up a rim in your bedroom, you are truly only limited by your imagination. These are a few simple ideas you can use in any household, and items you probably have lying around the home somewhere.

They are cheap, easy to work with, and will make a perfect rim/backboard, in even the tightest of spaces, or a small children’s bedroom where you want to place the hoop and rim set for the kids to play with.
